Welcome

Posted by Revd Michael Wallace on Monday, June 27, 2011

We've just had 62 Germans staying.

The we is All Saints' parish and friends. The Germans are Christophorus Kantorei, an award winning school choir from Altensteig in the Black Forest. They are on a New Zealand tour and we had the privilege of hosting them in Dunedin.

The choir gave a concert then sang for the 10.30 mass on Sunday. They were great.

At the 10.30 mass we also admitted a pharmacy student Loh into the catechumenate- welcomed him on the path to baptism.

This Sunday's gospel reading was Matthew 10:40-42 in which Jesus talks about welcome.

For Christians hospitality has always been a part of who we are. The call to welcome the stranger is throughout the scriptures and it is central to our identity as God's people.

Hospitality doesn't just happen. It has to be learnt and committed to.

Hospitality is about paying attention; paying attention to the other person, setting aside our discomfort about how someone may be different or strange to us and meeting her or him as they are.

Giving and receiving hospitality can be risky and it is not always successful. However God's people are called to offer hospitality again and again, to take the risk to welcome the stranger.

To offer hospitality, we simply bring who we are, what we have, where we are. At times that may be grand; at times that may be very little.

We are all called to be agents of God's hospitality and when we do this we make Christ's presence known.

Thank you Loh and Christophorus Kantorei for giving us the opportunity to welcome you.

With acknowlegments to Rev. Dr Trace Hawthorn.
